Gray Homes faces fresh scandal over unbuilt house, unpaid US10K refund

HARARE — Controversial construction firm Gray Homes Construction is facing fresh allegations after reportedly failing to build a house for a Harare couple and allegedly failing to refund US$10,760 despite signing a settlement agreement acknowledging the debt.

According to documents seen by newshour, the couple entered into an agreement with the company for the construction of a four-roomed house in Waterfalls and paid a total of US$10,760, representing the required 70 percent deposit under the contract.

The project was scheduled to commence before an April 2026 deadline but allegedly failed to break ground.

After Gray Homes cited “technical difficulties” for the delay, the parties signed a Deed of Settlement in which the company acknowledged owing the couple US$10,760 and undertook to refund the money through a phased repayment plan ending in September 2026.

However, the couple alleges that no payments have been made to date.

“Gray Homes Construction (Private) Limited has agreed to refund Felicity Chenai Chaendera the total net amount of US$10,760,” reads part of the settlement agreement, which outlines the repayment schedule.

The dispute has been compounded by claims that the couple has been unable to locate the company. They allege that Gray Homes no longer operates from the address listed on their receipt, 44 Longden Avenue, Belvedere, Harare.

Gray Homes chief executive officer Annavestah Mudiwa dismissed the allegations, insisting that the complainant’s version of events was inaccurate.

“Unfortunately, she is not telling the truth.

“We will also send you what we have the truth regarding this matter,” Mudiwa said.

As of publication, Mudiwa had not provided documentation to challenge the evidence presented by the complainants, which includes signed receipts, WhatsApp payment acknowledgements and the Deed of Settlement.

The matter has renewed concerns over accountability and consumer protection within Zimbabwe’s instalment-based housing and construction sector, where clients often make substantial upfront payments before projects commence.

Gray Homes previously attracted national attention after its directors, Annavestah and Gray Mudiwa, were arrested over allegations of defrauding Miniyothabo Baloyi-Chiwenga of nearly US$1 million in a separate matter, among other cases currently before the courts.
