HARARE — Freelance journalist Judith Nyuke, 39, was killed on Saturday after she was struck by a Geo Pomona waste collection truck along Harare Drive near Art Farm in Pomona, police said.
The crash happened at about 3.30pm, according to police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
“More details will be released as investigations continue,” Nyathi said.
Nyuke, a specialist court reporter, previously worked for H-Metro and 263Chat and was known for her coverage of court proceedings.
Geo Pomona, which is contracted by the City of Harare to collect waste, confirmed that one of its trucks was involved in the fatal crash and said it was “profoundly” saddened by Nyuke’s death.
“Geo Pomona is deeply saddened by this loss and extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and wider media community during this extremely difficult time,” the company said.
An internal review has since been launched by the waste management company, which said it was cooperating with authorities investigating the circumstances of the crash.
“Geo Pomona takes this incident with the utmost seriousness.
The company has initiated an internal review and is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” it said.
Further details would not be released while police investigations are underway, Geo Pomona said, citing respect for Nyuke’s family and the need to avoid speculation.
Support for Nyuke’s family would also be offered as the company engages them following the fatal accident.
