Lagos, Nigeria – Chidimma Adetshina, a South African beauty queen who was forced to drop out of the Miss South Africa contest amid controversy over her nationality, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria.
The 23-year-old law student, who was born in Soweto and raised in Cape Town, was invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant after her eligibility to compete in Miss South Africa was questioned.
Despite being a South African citizen, Adetshina’s father is Nigerian and her mother has Mozambican roots.
This led to some in South Africa questioning whether she was eligible to represent the country.
After an investigation by South African authorities, Adetshina dropped out of the Miss South Africa contest, citing concerns for her safety and well-being.
However, her story did not end there. The organizers of Miss Universe Nigeria were impressed by her resilience and invited her to compete in their pageant.
On Saturday, Adetshina was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria much to the delight of her supporters.
Adetshina won the pageant, surpassing 24 other models representing different states in Nigeria.
“This crown is not just for beauty. It’s a call for unity,” Adetshina said after her emotional victory.
Adetshina’s win has been celebrated on social media, with many praising her strength and determination.
By winning the crown, Adetshina will on November 16, represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico, where she will face off against Mia le Roux, the current Miss South Africa.

Ms le Roux became the first deaf woman in history to win the crown.
