HARARE — A self-styled prophet allegedly linked to the leaking of an audio recording in which late businessman Wicknell Chivayo discussed performing rituals to become rich has been arrested.
Christopher Guzha, also known as Madzibaba DVD, was arrested in Goromonzi on Sunday on allegations of armed robbery after an EcoCash agent lost US$12,000, law enforcement sources said.
His wife, Bridget, said that police officers immediately seized Guzha’s phone following his arrest.
Guzha’s son-in-law, who declined to be named, however, claimed the armed robbery charge was a pretext for investigating the leaked Chivayo audio.
“It has everything to do with the leaking of the Wicknell audio,” he said.
Guzha is expected to appear before a regional court in Marondera on Monday.
Chivayo, who died in a helicopter crash in Marondera last Wednesday, is heard in the viral recording thanking an unnamed Madzibaba for giving him lucky charms which he said helped him win favour with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chivayo is also heard promising the Johane Masowe eChishanu cleric a vehicle once his fortunes improved.
He asks about the cleric’s availability to perform what he describes as one final ritual at Lake Kariba, involving lowering a clay pot containing ritual objects into the depths of the lake.
The recording, whose authenticity has been established, sparked widespread discussion on social media following Chivayo’s death.
