HARARE — Police have launched a manhunt for opposition activist Godfrey Karemba, popularly known as Madzibaba VeShanduko, over allegations of undermining police authority.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, in a statement dated July 22, 2026, said police were seeking information on Godfrey Karemba’s location and whereabouts in connection with reports of undermining police authority.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is seeking information on the location and whereabouts of Madzibaba ‘Veshanduko’ – Godfrey Karemba in connection with reports of undermining police authority,” Nyathi said.
Members of the public with information were urged to contact the nearest police station, the National Complaints Desk or the police WhatsApp tip-off line.
Police, however, did not disclose the specific circumstances surrounding the allegations or indicate when and where the alleged offence was committed.
Karemba’s latest brush with law enforcement comes less than two months after he was acquitted and released from prison following an eight-month detention linked to alleged anti-government mobilisation activities.
Harare magistrate Lisa Mutendereki discharged him on June 3 after ruling that the State had failed to establish a prima facie case.
Known for his outspoken support of former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa, Karemba became a prominent opposition figure through his street campaigns and social media activism.
While police have not publicly explained the basis of the new allegations, reports circulating online suggest investigators may be examining recent social media content linked to Karemba ahead of anti-government demonstrations planned for July 31.
Those claims have not been independently confirmed by authorities.
The police appeal follows previous legal battles involving Karemba.
In October 2025, he was arrested and charged with incitement to commit public violence after allegedly distributing flyers linked to planned protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.
He denied wrongdoing and was ultimately acquitted.
Police have appealed to anyone with information on Karemba’s whereabouts to come forward.
