Harare – A devastating road accident claimed the lives of seven people and injured four others on Thursday morning when a fuel tanker plowed into a commuter omnibus at a busy intersection in Harare’s Kuwadzana high-density suburb.
This horrific incident occurred just after 5 AM on the Harare-Bulawayo road.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the commuter omnibus overturned, ejecting several passengers.
National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic news, stating that five individuals died instantly, while six others sustained injuries.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 31′ October 2024 at around 0510 hours along Harare—Bulawayo Road, Kuwadzana 7 turn off at the traffic controlled intersection of First Street and Bulawayo Road, Harare.
“Five people were killed while six others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi with (a) yet to be established number of passengers on board collided with a fuel tanker with no passengers on board.
“The kombi had turned right into Bulawayo Road in front of the oncoming fuel tanker,” said Nyathi.
In a later update, Nyathi said: “The death toll has risen to seven” after two more people succumbed to their injuries.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
The five victims have not yet been identified by their next of kin.
