Limpopo, South Africa – A South African police officer has been arrested in connection with six murders allegedly committed to claim R10 million (approximately US$568,140) in insurance payouts.

The 43-year-old officer was apprehended following an investigation into allegations of fraudulent insurance claims.

Her alleged killing spree began in 2019.

The victims, who were known to the officer, were reportedly from disadvantaged backgrounds and often had disabilities or mental challenges.

The officer allegedly obtained life and funeral insurance policies on their behalf, naming herself as the beneficiary.

The policewoman was arrested at her workplace on Thursday morning.

South African national police spokesperson General Fannie Masemola, said if proven, the involvement of a law enforcement official in such heinous crimes is “a disgrace.”

He emphasized that police officers are entrusted with the responsibility of protecting communities and that the alleged actions represent a gross abuse of trust.

The policewoman is expected to appear in the Polokwane district court on Friday facing six counts of murder and 17 cases of fraud.
