Mum’s rebuke over cooking oil drives 21-year-old man to suicide

Bulawayo – A 21-year-old man from Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, has died after ingesting rat poison following an argument with his mother over spilled cooking oil, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Thabiso Ndlovu died at Mpilo Central Hospital on July 14, two days after consuming the toxic substance at home.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the incident occurred around 1PM on July 12.

Ndlovu had allegedly been reprimanded by his 41-year-old mother for wasting cooking oil, which reportedly triggered the fatal response.

“The warning did not go down well with the now deceased, who got angry and drank rat killer poison.

“His mother saw him vomiting and when she inquired, he admitted to having consumed the poison,” said Msebele.

An ambulance was called, and Ndlovu was taken to Mpilo Hospital where he was admitted under observation.

On the morning of July 14, hospital staff informed the family that he had passed away.

Police say investigations are ongoing, though no foul play is suspected.

The tragedy adds to a concerning trend of suicides in Bulawayo linked to emotional distress and family conflict.

Authorities have reiterated calls for greater mental health awareness and for communities to address domestic tensions constructively.
