Harare – Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa claimed on Tuesday that his X (formerly Twitter) account had been “hacked and compromised by cybercriminals” following a suspicious post promoting a cryptocurrency dubbed God Is In It* or $GIT.
The unauthorized post appeared shortly after 3 AM CAT but was mysteriously deleted before 5 AM, raising questions about who removed it if Chamisa had already lost access.
In a statement on his WhatsApp channel, the opposition leader assured the public that he was working to “regain control” of the account, distancing himself from the crypto endorsement.
“To my fellow citizens, I wish to kindly inform you that my X (formerly Twitter) account has been hacked and compromised by cybercriminals.
“Our cybersecurity team is working diligently with X support team to fix this problem, regain control and implement remedial measures.
“We will keep you updated on the status of the account recovery and any actions being taken.~nc,” Chamisa wrote, urging vigilance against fraudulent activity.
The X post was accompanied by two videos of Chamisa allegedly speaking while wearing a nightgown, and carrying a piece of paper written $GIT.

While some Twitter users suggested that the video was AI generated, one “investor” claimed to have bought a token for $500 as the crypto appeared to be sitting at a 48,000 market cap.
“Dear @nelsonchamisa: If you are going to come up with ‘your account was hacked’ it’s a load of nonsense. There is not a single picture of you on the internet in a gown or doing a video in a gown. I want my $500 I aped back,” wrote Jahman Adamski.
