HARARE – A 35-year-old man who served as a boy scout trainer in the Chief Seke area was sentenced to 28 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of aggravated indecent assault and contravening the Data Protection Act.

The accused, whose name has been withheld to protect the victims’ identities, was convicted of indecently assaulting boys aged between 10 and 19.

The incidents occurred over a two-year period, from January 2022 to January 2024.

In a Wednesday statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said the accused used his position as a karate instructor to prey on his young students.

“The accused person used to train the boys karate and would take advantage of their camp days.

“He would instruct them to thoroughly wash themselves, after which he would show them pornographic material on his laptop before indecently assaulting them.

“The matter came to light when one of the complainants narrated his ordeal to his parents and they alerted other parents via their WhatsApp group,” read the NPA statement.

Upon hearing about the allegations, other victims also came forward, revealing their own experiences.

The accused was brought before a Chitungwiza Regional Magistrate, who found him guilty on all counts.

The magistrate sentenced him to 28 years imprisonment, effective.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the safety of children and the need for stricter measures to protect them from sexual abuse.
