Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, who served as the ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania from 2019 to 2023, will be a distinguished guest at a commemorative dialogue in Dar es Salaam on Friday.
The event will honor the late former Tanzanian founding leader Julius Mwalimu Nyerere, a visionary statesman and a symbol of Pan-Africanism.
His legacy of peace, unity, and self-reliance continues to inspire generations.
Joining General Sanyatwe will be a distinguished panel of speakers, including former South African President Thabo Mbeki, former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and Suo Peng, a representative from the Communist Party of China.
The commemorative dialogue will be held under the theme: Mwalimu Nyerere and the Liberation Movement: Reflections on Solidarity, Leadership, Pan-Africanism, and African Unity.
A liberation war fighter himself, General Sanyatwe will discuss Nyerere’s enduring vision for Africa and its impact on the formation of the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
He will emphasize the importance of carrying forward Nyerere’s legacy in today’s context while upholding its original values.
Nyerere, one of Africa’s most revered nationalists, dreamed of a united and prosperous continent.
He served as Tanzania’s first president from 1964 to 1985, leading the country to independence from British colonial rule.
Nyerere’s economic and social policies were centered on African socialism, self-reliance, and equality.
He expanded healthcare services, providing free medical care and improving access to health facilities.
Additionally, Nyerere promoted education and literacy, introducing free universal primary education and increasing literacy rates from 20% to over 80%.
Perhaps Nyerere’s most significant contribution was the Arusha Declaration, which outlined his commitment to creating an egalitarian socialist society based on cooperative agriculture in Tanzania.
