HARARE — Police have identified the man arrested for allegedly brandishing a firearm during a confrontation at a school rugby match in Harare as Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena, the son of late liberation war commander Alfred Nikita Mangena.
Mangena, 50, was arrested following an incident at Eaglesvale College on June 13 after a rugby fixture between the host school and Bulawayo-based Christian Brothers College (CBC).
Videos circulating on social media show Mangena entering the field during a confrontation involving players and spectators at the conclusion of the match.
He was allegedly seen holding a firearm during the altercation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the firearm had been recovered and seized as part of investigations.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Mangena had been charged with assault and pointing a firearm.
“The suspect, Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena (50), has been arrested and charged with assault and pointing a firearm. The firearm involved in the incident has been seized by the police,” Nyathi said.
Mangena reportedly has a son who plays for CBC.
Police have not yet disclosed when Mangena is expected to appear in court.
