Chinhoyi – Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba, narrowly escaped injury in a serious car accident on Sunday.

Her Toyota Land Cruiser collided with a fuel tanker along the Harare-Chirundu Highway.

The incident occurred as Justice Chigumba was returning to Harare from Chinhoyi.


Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed the crash in a statement on Monday, assuring the public that the ZEC chairperson was unharmed.


“Yesterday (Sunday), ZEC chairperson, Justice Chigumba, was involved in an accident on her way from Chinhoyi when a haulage tanker crashed into three vehicles including hers.

“There were no fatalities from the accident and Justice Chigumba was not injured,” said Mangwana.


Images of the damaged Toyota Land Cruiser, parked on the side of the highway, quickly circulated on social media.

The impact of the collision caused significant damage to the SUV’s front end, including a crushed bonnet, a dislodged wheel,and broken windows.

Despite the severity of the crash, the airbags deployed, likely protecting Justice Chigumba from serious harm.
