Two Harare police officers arrested in bribery scandal

By Staff Reporter

Harare – Two Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers have been arrested following a viral video showing them allegedly soliciting bribes from public transport vehicles near the Mabvuku turn-off along the Harare-Mutare Road.

The video footage appears to show drivers handing over suspected bribe money, with the recorder’s voiceover claiming that the officers had accepted bribes from over 10 motorists.

Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva now face both disciplinary and criminal charges.

National police spokesperson Comissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Chifamba and Gunzva, whom he described as “bad apples” not deserving to serve “Police Service.”

“These are bad apples who do not deserve to be serving in the Police Service,” Nyathi said in a statement, stressing that the ZRP will not tolerate corruption within its ranks.

“The Commissioner-General of Police does not condone corruption by any police officer and will ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favour,” said Nyathi.

The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for police reform.

Recent reports have emerged of similar misconduct by officers stationed at the ZBC traffic lights along Beatrice Road, who allegedly stop motorists for minor offenses and demand bribes to release their vehicles.
