Beitbridge – The son of former president Robert Mugabe, Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, has been arrested for violent conduct in Beitbridge where he allegedly assaulted a policeman at a roadblock at Bubi, 80 kilometres north of the border town.

Mugabe is accused of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

According to a credible source, Mugabe arrived at the Bubi checkpoint in the morning, driven by a Chinese driver, but became irritated when police asked for car documentation and began shouting at them.

“He started shouting at the police saying you are delaying us, do you know who I am.

“He then angrily and violently grabbed a Support Unit officer by the collar and tore off his shirt buttons in the process,” said the source.

Mugabe, according to the source, brandished a knife during the confrontation.

Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, the officer commanding Beitbridge Police District, confirmed the arrest but was unable to provide further details at the time.

“I have just heard he was arrested but I am not in the office,” said Ncube.

After the incident, Mugabe was taken to Beitbridge Rural Police Station for processing.

Chatunga Mugabe is the second son of Robert Mugabe, with his siblings including his brother Robert Mugabe Jr. and sister Bona Mugabe.
