Harare– The Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (SWAZ) has welcomed the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) decision to fine FC Platinum head coach Norman Mapeza for unsportsmanlike conduct toward a journalist, while also commending the steps taken to resolve the matter.
Mapeza was fined USD250 by the PSL following an incident involving Nehanda Radio sports reporter Tafadzwa Chigandiwa during a post-match media briefing at Rufaro Stadium on April 30, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, SWAZ applauded the resolutions
“The Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (SWAZ) welcomes the Premier Soccer League’s decision to fine FC Platinum head coach Norman Mapeza USD250 for unsportsmanlike conduct toward a journalist during a post-match media briefing at Rufaro Stadium on 30 April 2025.”
SWAZ acknowledged the league’s swift response after receiving a formal complaint and noted the importance of the sanction in promoting professionalism.
“We view this sanction as an important step in affirming the values of professionalism and mutual respect in football-media relations,” the association stated.
FC Platinum was also praised for taking proactive steps, including organizing a mediation meeting between Mapeza and Chigandiwa, facilitated by a media consultant.
“We also take note of FC Platinum’s efforts to resolve the matter, including facilitating a meeting between Coach Mapeza and journalist Tafadzwa Chigandiwa under the guidance of a media consultant.
“The club’s commitment to improving future interactions and reinforcing its media policy is a commendable step in the right direction.”
SWAZ further appreciated Mapeza’s expression of regret and his commitment to rebuilding trust with the media.
The association reiterated its commitment to ethical reporting and constructive engagement within Zimbabwe’s football landscape, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and mutual respect.
“We trust all parties will continue working towards a football culture grounded in mutual respect and openness,” said SWAZ.
