Bulawayo – Renowned historian, biographer, playwright, and poet Pathisa Nyathi, a revered figure in Zimbabwean cultural heritage, passed away on Saturday at the age of 73.

Nyathi, who had been ailing for some time, was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo on Friday, according to family spokesperson Reverend Paul Damasane.

Born in Kezi, Matabeleland South, in 1951, Nyathi was a prolific author, penning over 50 books.

He also contributed a regular newspaper column exploring the rich history of Ndebele customs and traditions.

Tributes poured in from across the nation and beyond, honoring Nyathi’s significant contributions to Zimbabwean history and culture.

Former Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo said: “Phathisa Nyathi was a fountain of wisdom at its best, an indefatigable champion of indigenous knowledge and enduring African values; an engaging oral historian, visionary storyteller, eminent teacher and a prolific author whose invaluable contribution to the Zimbabwean story will be a tall order to match.”

Former Cowdray Park MP Pashor Sibanda echoed these sentiments, stating, “Zimbabwe has lost a monumental figure in Pathisa Nyathi, a guardian of our history, a reservoir of wisdom, and a beacon of cultural pride.”

“His legacy is etched into the soul of our nation, guiding us forward.,” added Sibanda.

A former educator, Nyathi’s extensive body of work delved into the histories of Southern African tribes, their migrations, interrelations, and biographies of historical figures.

On social media, Zimbabweans mourned the loss of this cultural icon, recognizing his tireless efforts to preserve and share the nation’s rich history.

Many expressed gratitude for his willingness to share his knowledge and inspire future generations of historians and researchers.

“Nyathi was a wealth of knowledge, a custodian of our history and customs. He was always so willing to share his knowledge and teach anyone who would ask. He inspired so many of us to research,” wrote @malaikadiva on X.

As Zimbabwe bids farewell to this esteemed historian, his legacy will continue to illuminate the path forward for generations to come.
