Harare — The Great Zimbabwe Marathon, scheduled for October 19, 2025, marks a major milestone this year as it turns five.

What started as an ambitious vision to combine sport with heritage has grown into a nationally recognised road race, now officially certified by World Athletics.

The marathon is the first event of its kind in Masvingo to receive international recognition, making it one of Zimbabwe’s most prestigious sporting fixtures.

Its global accreditation places it among professionally rated races worldwide — a proud achievement for Masvingo and the country.

Founded by Loreen Alutah Chari, a native of Chivi and club captain of Eastview Elites Running Club, the marathon blends athleticism with a celebration of Zimbabwean identity.

“This is not just a marathon; it’s a celebration of who we are as Zimbabweans,” said Chari.

“Running through the land of our ancestors and finishing at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments connects us to our roots in a truly profound way.”

The course begins at Clipsham and finishes at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments Campsite, offering runners a symbolic journey through one of the country’s most historic regions.

Along the route, participants experience sweeping views and the hospitality of the Karanga people.

This year’s edition will feature four race categories: a 10km Fun Run, a 25km Challenge, the 42.2km Full Marathon, and a special 5km race in honour of the event’s fifth anniversary.

The full marathon is a qualifying event for international races, including South Africa’s Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons.

Following its World Athletics certification, the event can also serve as a qualifier for the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships.

Each year, the race attracts hundreds of athletes, supporters, and tourists from across Zimbabwe and beyond.

For many, it’s not just about competition, but about experiencing the landscape of the Great Zimbabwe ruins — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the spiritual heart of the nation.

“Masvingo has so much more to offer than people realize,” said Chari.

“This race is about showcasing our cultural roots, attracting the world to our doorstep, and inspiring the next generation of Zimbabwean runners.”

Organisers expect the fifth edition to be the biggest yet, with rising numbers of elite and recreational runners, increased media coverage, and expanded cultural showcases.

The event also creates opportunities for local economic growth through tourism and business participation.

Masvingo’s business community is being encouraged to support the event through sponsorships and partnerships.

Hotels, transport operators, artisans, and other service providers stand to benefit from the influx of visitors.

Strategic local partnerships not only boost the race experience but also position Masvingo as an emerging centre for sports tourism.

Organisers believe that continued support could turn the marathon into a lasting legacy.

With its international accreditation and growing reputation, the Great Zimbabwe Marathon is set for continued expansion.

Organisers are calling on all stakeholders — from government to grassroots — to support the race and build on its success.
