Fraud-accused Chimombe, Mpofu trial postponed to October 22

Jailed business duo, Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, successfully secured a postponement of their trial to October 22.

They informed the court that they intend to prepare their application for referral of their case to the Constitutional Court.

The duo seeks to address constitutional issues they believe have arisen in their case.

They intend to make a joint application to the apex court before proceeding with their trial.

Presiding Judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda, granted the postponement after the state, represented by Witness Mabhaudhi, did not object to the request.

“The accused will submit their application for referral to the Constitutional Court by Tuesday 8 October, the state will file its notice of opposition Monday 14 October 2024.

“Parties will therefore appear before this court on the 22nd for argument of this case,” said Kwenda granting the application.

Mpofu and Chimombe are facing fraud charges stemming from an alleged US$7,7 million government scam involving a botched presidential goat tender deal.

They have been languishing in prison since their arrest in June this year.

The two maintain that they are being targeted by powerful external forces with personal agendas.

They claim their legal troubles began after Wicknell Chivayo’s leaked audio recordings claiming he had bribed senior government officials to win election-related tenders worth over US$100 million.
