JOHANNESBURG — South African police are investigating an attempted murder case after a vehicle driven by Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga came under gunfire in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Lunga, 30, who plays for South African Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns, was driving a blue BMW along Tudhope Street in Hillbrow with friends when they were approached by an unidentified man.
According to a South African Police Service statement, the man claimed he had mistaken Lunga and his companions for undercover traffic police.
He alleged that occupants of a vehicle ahead had robbed him of R34,000 and appealed for their assistance.
Lunga and his companions followed the suspected vehicle.
During the pursuit, one of the occupants allegedly opened fire on Lunga’s BMW.
“One of the bullets struck the BMW, leaving a bullet hole. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained,” police said.
Police have opened an attempted murder case at Hillbrow Police Station.
No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
