Harare —Two courageous Real Star Security guards were commended and rewarded by their employer for thwarting a brazen armed robbery involving eight assailants at a Petrotrade service station in Mabvuku last week.
The incident, which occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Thursday, culminated in a fierce exchange of gunfire before the assailants fled empty-handed.
Bhekimpilo Sibanda and Isaac Nhamo, stationed at the service station, demonstrated exceptional valor when confronted by the armed gang.
Despite being outnumbered, Sibanda fearlessly fired his service-issued 303 rifle, wounding the suspected ringleader.
The assailants retaliated, but the guards held their ground while calling for backup.
Faced with determined resistance, the attackers abandoned their efforts and fled toward Mutare Road.
Police and a Real Star Security rapid-response team arrived promptly, but the suspects had already escaped.
Investigators confirmed the perpetrators infiltrated the premises by cutting through a section of the perimeter diamond mesh fencing on the southern side.
The station had closed for business at 8 p.m. the previous evening.
In recognition of their heroism, Sibanda and Nhamo received grocery hampers and US$2,000 in cash during a ceremony held Friday.
Real Star Security’s assistant operations manager, Oskah Mugomeri, praised the duo’s vigilance and composure.
“We would like to commend our security personnel Bhekimpilo Sibanda and Isaac Nhamo for their vigilance, dedication to duty and quick action.
“Their alertness and bravery played a crucial role in preventing a more serious situation,” said Mugomeri.
Harare Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed no injuries were sustained by the guards and that investigations are ongoing.
“No guard sustained any injuries and the robbers failed to get anything,” said Chakanza.
Police continue to pursue leads, urging anyone with information to come forward.
The incident underscores the critical role of private security personnel in combating organized crime, particularly amid rising concerns over armed robberies across the country.
