HARARE — A 29-year-old Mutare man has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a police officer following the circulation of a viral social media video showing the incident at a service station.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Brendon Tsakatsa (29), of House Number 1285, Chikanga 1, Mutare, was arrested for allegedly assaulting Constable Maxwell Mukumbuzi at a service station in Mutare on June 29, 2026.
Commissioner Nyathi said the arrest follows investigations into the incident after the video circulated widely on social media.
He warned kombi and pirate taxi operators, as well as all members of the public, against assaulting, resisting or obstructing police officers in the lawful execution of their duties.
“Such conduct constitutes a criminal offence and offenders will be arrested and brought before the courts without fear or favour,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
He urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers and to use established channels to raise any grievances regarding police conduct rather than resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police says it remains committed to enforcing the law and ensuring that anyone who attacks police officers while they are lawfully carrying out their duties is brought to justice.
