HARARE — The Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform (ZYAP) has come to the defence of businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, urging Zimbabweans to engage in balanced and fact-based debate following widespread criticism of a lavish wedding involving members of his family.
In a statement, ZYAP chairman Tonderai Chidawa said the public reaction to the high-profile wedding had unfairly singled out Tagwirei, despite his contributions to the country’s economy and social development initiatives.
“The issue should never be about attacking wealth itself, but rather about ensuring that all business activity in Zimbabwe is conducted lawfully, transparently and in ways that contribute to national development,” Chidawa said.
The remarks come in the wake of intense public debate surrounding the wedding of Taonanyasha John Tagwirei and Poneso Tinomuda Janda, which reportedly featured gifts worth more than US$20 million and attracted significant attention on social media.
Critics argued that the extravagance on display highlighted widening inequality in Zimbabwe, where many citizens continue to grapple with economic hardship, low incomes and deteriorating public services.
However, ZYAP said it was wrong to criminalise successful indigenous entrepreneurs without evidence of wrongdoing.
Chidawa said Tagwirei had continued investing in Zimbabwe during difficult economic periods when many businesses scaled down operations or moved capital outside the country.
He said investments linked to Tagwirei through Sakunda Holdings and associated ventures had supported key sectors including agriculture, energy, mining and infrastructure.
The organisation also cited philanthropic initiatives undertaken through the Bridging Gaps Foundation, including support for schools, hospitals, churches, irrigation schemes, borehole drilling, solar projects and youth empowerment programmes.
“It is unfortunate that success achieved by indigenous Zimbabwean businesspeople is often automatically criminalised or politicised without evidence,” Chidawa said.
ZYAP further argued that the wedding should not be politicised, describing it as a private family celebration and noting that lavish weddings and gift-giving were common across the world.
Tagwirei has in recent years championed youth participation in entrepreneurship, innovation and modernised agriculture, while advocating for increased local investment and home-grown economic solutions.
The youth organisation urged Zimbabweans to focus on economic growth, job creation and national unity rather than what it described as selective condemnation of successful local business people.
