BIKITA — The Democratic Alliance of Zimbabwe (DAZ), has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots politics following the withdrawal of its Ward 13 by-election candidate in Bikita, Brilliant Mukaro.
Mukaro formally withdrew from the race after filing papers with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
He cited dissatisfaction with campaign support, saying resources fell short of his expectations.
He denied claims that he was pressured by the ruling Zanu PF to step down, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.
In a statement, DAZ spokesperson Sibusisiso Sikhosana said the party follows a transparent and uniform support system for all candidates.
“DAZ operates a fair and transparent support model for all our candidates, particularly in rural wards like Bikita.
“Our records show that Mr Mukaro was given the party’s full, standard campaign package.
“This included a budget for leaflets, transport, and community meetings, all in line with our planned spending for local by-elections,” Sikhosana explained.
“We focus on responsible use of resources to build a lasting presence, not just one-off campaigns.”
She confirmed that the party’s campaign team was already working in Ward 13 before Mukaro’s decision to leave.
This development sheds light on the common challenges faced by resource-constrained opposition parties in Zimbabwe, especially when compared to the long-standing ruling party, Zanu PF.l
Political Analyst Tendai Murota, said
DAZ appears focused on building institutional systems rather than candidate-centred campaigns
“The real test for a newer party is whether it has reliable systems in place, not just how much money it can spend.
“DAZ seems to be focusing on a consistent, organised approach, which can sometimes be misunderstood by those wanting more individualised support,” said Murota.
DAZ said it respects Mukaro’s decision, will field a replacement candidate, and remains committed to the residents of Ward 13.
“Our goal is to serve the community, not individuals.
“That commitment is built into our party’s systems, and our work in Bikita continues without delay,” Sikhosana said.
