Harare – A truck driver and his passenger leapt from their vehicle moments before it collided with a passing train in Kadoma on Wednesday night, causing a derailment, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) said.
This marks the third collision between a train and a vehicle in the country within two weeks.
The NRZ reported that the driver appeared to have lost control of his sand-laden lorry as it approached a rail and road level crossing around 11:50 PM.
“The driver and his passenger jumped off the truck and left it to ram into the last two wagons of the passing train. The two men were rushed to hospital where they were treated and discharged,” the NRZ said in a statement.
“We keep urging drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching all level crossings and avoid using defective vehicles.”
On May 21, a Honda Fit carrying six male passengers was struck by a train around 1 AM while crossing railway tracks on Chiremba Road in Harare.
The occupants escaped with moderate injuries.
Earlier, on May 13, a police Mahindra vehicle was severely damaged in Gweru after the driver failed to yield to an oncoming train. The two officers inside survived with minor injuries.
